press release fromPress kit UEFA EURO 2024
During the UEFA EURO 2024, Stuttgart is presenting itself as a special host with public viewing, EURO 2024 Festival and cultural events.
- UEFA EURO 2024: Stuttgart – an exceptional host
From 14 June to 14 July 2024 Germany is hosting the UEFA EURO 2024. And Stuttgart, too, will then be at the focus of football fans from all over Europe. As one of ten host cities, Stuttgart is looking forward to staging matches with teams from Slovenia, Denmark, Hungary, Scotland, Belgium, Ukraine and Germany. Stuttgart will present itself as an exceptional host with public viewing, the EURO 2024 Festival and a wide range of cultural offers.
Under the motto "The whole city a stadium", Baden-Württemberg's capital will be an outstanding host to visitors from Germany and abroad. Like Stuttgart's unique 'stadium topography' with vineyards and hills that enclose the city centre, the motto also echoes the inhabitants' passion for sports. This "home EURO" is namely just the latest in a long series of magnificent past sporting highlights. As far back as 1993 the World Athletics Championships enthused masses of spectators, carried away in the euphoria of 'Mexican Waves' in the arena. And in 2006 Stuttgart rose to even greater heights as the city of the "summer fairy tale", when after a thrilling championship the German national team won third place here in the FIFA World Cup. In 2024 Stuttgart Arena will be the venue for four group matches (16 / 19 / 23 / 26 June) and one quarter-final (5 July). But apart from these five games, guests and football fans alike can look forward to an unforgettable experience. The Fan Zone on Palace Square, right in the heart of town, guarantees an electrifying atmosphere for 30,000 people. Here, fans can watch all 51 matches of the UEFA EURO 2024 on giant screens, share in the excitement and celebrate with their favourites. In addition to public viewing they can also join in sporting and other activities on the Marketplace. On Karlsplatz the theme is culture, while Schillerplatz is the place for gastronomy.
For all those hoping to experience more than just football, the short distances between the stadium, the city centre and countless cultural institutions are ideally convenient for combining this international sporting event with the city's wide range of attractions, all within easy reach. The Museum of Art, the Opera House and Theatre, the New and Old Palaces, the State Gallery and the Stadtpalais/Museum for Stuttgart are located all around Palace Square and only five minutes' walk away. Standing out on the skyline and visible from all of these places is Stuttgart's landmark, the SWR TV Tower Stuttgart. This unique blend is second to none in Germany and makes Stuttgart the perfect destination for event and culture enthusiasts.

The Stuttgart Citytour with its practical hop-on/hop-off system operates on three different routes through Baden-Württemberg's state capital. The Blue Tour lasts around 100 minutes and takes in Stuttgart's most important attractions, including the Mercedes-Benz Museum opposite the Stuttgart Arena and the Killesberg Park – a pleasant spot away from the hustle and bustle. The one-hour Green Tour through the south and west of Stuttgart includes, among other things, the SWR Stuttgart Television Tower, which also appears in the logo of the Host City of Stuttgart. There are eight stops along the route where passengers can get on and off the bus as they please. While both of these tours are in the distinctive red, double-decker buses of the Stuttgart Mercedes-Benz brand, the Stuttgart Wine Tour takes you on an idyllic drive through Stuttgart's vineyards in a little red electric bus. It's well worth getting off at the Royal Burial Chapel on the Württemberg, for example – a visit to this memorial to everlasting love can be combined with a walk through the vines and a view over the Stuttgart Arena. Also on the route is the Stuttgart Museum of Viniculture in the wine-growing town of Uhlbach – with special opening hours during the UEFA EURO 2024 (18. & 25.6. 14 – 18 and 19. & 26.6. 11 – 16).Departure times for the Stuttgart Citytour:

- The only city in the world with two automobile museums
With the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum, Stuttgart is the only city in the world to boast not one, but two automobile museums. The Mercedes-Benz Museum documents the history of the automobile and the Mercedes-Benz brand from the very beginning up to the present day. And visitors to the Porsche Museum can trace the product history of this Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. - Who would have known…?
Many inventions devised in Stuttgart have sweetened people's everyday lives or made them easier. Gottlieb Daimler and Robert Bosch are certainly two of the best-known inventors, but the power saw (Andreas Stihl), the high-pressure cleaner (Alfred Kärcher) and the Leitz ring binder (Louis Leitz) also have their origins in the Stuttgart region. And last but by no means least, of course, so does Ritter Sport chocolate (Alfred and Clara Ritter), still sold today in its unique square bars. - The World's most beautiful needle
The pioneer of all television towers, it's considered an aesthetic and architectural masterpiece: the Stuttgart Television Tower. Constructed over 60 years ago and today one of the city's main landmarks, it also appears in the logo of the Host City of Stuttgart. - Heart of the City
Palace Square is the heart of the city. A 360° turn gives you a clear view of many of Stuttgart's main attractions: the Old and New Palaces, the Stuttgart Museum of Art, Königstraße, and the Palace Gardens with the Opera House. All year round, this square in the city centre is the stage for countless celebrations and festivals – from the International Festival of Animated Film to the jazzopen and the Christmas light installations. And this year Palace Square has an additional function as one of four fan zones during the UEFA EURO 2024. - Europe's largest triple-branch theatre
The Stuttgart State Theatres are Europe's largest multi-genre theatre. With their long tradition and at the same time a willingness to experiment, they set new benchmarks each season with outstanding performances in opera, ballet and drama. The exterior of the Opera House building itself, built in the style of Classicism, is also well worth seeing. - A mecca for culture lovers
The Stuttgart State Gallery and the Stuttgart Museum of Art are two outstanding showpieces of Stuttgart's art scene. The Stuttgart State Gallery is one of Germany's leading and most visited art galleries and has works from around 800 years of art history. The collection of the Stuttgart Museum of Art comprises more than 15,000 exhibits dating from the late 18th century up to the present day. The Museum of Art also owns an important collection of some 250 works by Otto Dix. - Stuttgart is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site
The two houses designed by Le Corbusier – the semi-detached building containing the Weissenhof Museum and the detached family home behind it – have been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 2016, and the first in Stuttgart. Insights into the history and architecture of the Weissenhof Estate are provided by the museum of the same name. In December 2023 the SWR Stuttgart Television Tower was also submitted by Germany on its Tentative List as a potential UNESCO World Cultural Heritage candidate. - A culinary trip around the world
Stuttgart's Art Nouveau Market Hall, built in 1914, is considered one of the most beautiful market halls in the whole of Germany. The listed building with its frescos contains a gourmet's paradise, with 33 stalls selling international delicacies. - Wine-loving Stuttgart
Stuttgart is a city of wine. A unique feature: the vines stretch right into the centre of town. At any time of year the vineyards surrounding the city are a popular place for outings, and one of the finest views over the idyllic Neckar Valley, Stuttgart and the acres of vines is from the Royal Burial Chapel on the Württemberg. One of the region's special features is its so-called "broom taverns" – temporary wine bars where wine growers are allowed to serve only their own wines. The broom at the door shows that they're open for business. - Stuttgart for fine food
Baden-Württemberg's state capital boasts no fewer than eight restaurants with Guide Michelin stars. No less delicious is the regional cuisine that is served, for example, in many of the wine taverns. Typical local specialities include Zwiebelrostbraten (fried steak with onions), Maultaschen (filled pasta pockets) and Linsen mit Spätzle (lentils with Swabian noodles). - Drinks in unusual places
Cocktails in a former bank vault, long drinks in what was once a public toilet, or regional beers in an old saddlery – Stuttgart's bar scene has some unexpected locations. - Stuttgart's Promising Prospects
Stuttgart's topography is unique: The city nestles in a valley basin, surrounded by green hills and vineyards. They afford magnificent panoramic views over the surrounding countryside and the heart of the city. Popular lookout points include, for example, Karlshöhe, Eugensplatz and the Teahouse. - Paths with a difference…
The so-called "Stäffele", meaning steps, or stairways, are a relic from bygone days. In the second half of the 19th century, flights of steps and paths were built to facilitate the cultivation of the steep vineyard terraces. Over 400 of these have survived and lead up to wonderful scenic lookouts and enchanted places.

- Stuttgart Citytour
The successful Stuttgart Citytour has long since established itself as a tourism flagship and has high symbolic significance in Stuttgart with its red Mercedes-Benz buses and the red electric bus. Passengers can get to know the city on three classic circular tours with the hop-on/hop-off system.
The red, open-top Mercedes-Benz double-deckers invite guests to enjoy a city tour with a difference in the birthplace of the automobile. The hop-on/hop-off principle allows you to explore the city at your own pace with the Blue and Green Tours.
The Blue Tour (introduced in 2014) lasts around 100 minutes and takes in Stuttgart's most important places of interest – Palace Square, the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the vineyards and the Weissenhof Estate. The Blue Tour circuit has nine stops.
With the Green Tour you take to the hills. Since 2017 the red, open-top double-decker buses have been touring the south and west of Stuttgart. There are eight stopping points on the approximately one-hour circular tour, where you can get off and on as you please. The Television Tower, Stuttgart's main landmark, is also part of this Citytour route. The Green Tour is in operation from end of march to beginning of November. The departure point and terminus of both tours is the "i-Punkt" Tourist Information, Königstraße 1a (opposite the main railway station). During the tours the audio guide provides a very special listening experience. The audio guide is available in eleven languages (including German and Swabian). Audio drama scenes introduce passengers to the history of the city, and the youngest guests will love the special children's channel (in German only). The tour therefore not only gives tourists from Germany and abroad, but also the inhabitants of Stuttgart and the surrounding region the opportunity to get to know the state capital from a completely new angle. There's also an attractive new addition to visiting the tourist highlights in the form of gastronomy options along the routes.
Since April 2020 the seasonal Stuttgart Wine Tour has been cruising through Stuttgart's wonderful vineyard landscapes. Lasting approximately 35 minutes, the Wine Tour can ideally be combined with the Blue Tour, as it's easy to switch to the electrically-powered bus at the Mercedes-Benz Museum stop. Wine and nature lovers can get on and off as they please at nine stopping points to visit various wineries, the Stuttgart Museum of Viniculture or the Royal Burial Chapel on the Württemberg. After completing the Wine Tour they can continue their trip with the Blue Tour – but of course the Wine Tour is also a separate tour in its own right.
The idea for the Stuttgart Citytour came from the Stuttgart-Marketing GmbH. It is also responsible for the route, marketing and sales, in cooperation with the organiser, the Stuttgart Citytour company Willms Touristik GmbH & Co. KG.
The 24-hour tickets for the Stuttgart Citytour can be bought from the Stuttgart-Marketing GmbH: at the "i-Punkt" Tourist Information, Königstr. 1a, the Tourist Information at Stuttgart Airport, Level 2, Terminal 3, the Customer Service Department under Tel. +49 (0)711/22 28-0, by e-mail at touren@stuttgart-tourist.de, online under www.stuttgart-citytour.de, or on the buses.
- The Stuttgart Region
"Herrgottsbscheißerle" (Maultaschen), the Stuttgart Ballet, Bosch, Ritter Sport, Porsche, Otto Dix, Stihl, Le Corbusier, GinSTR, Kärcher, Kessler, Mercedes, Oskar Schlemmer, the Television Tower, Wulle, Die Fantastischen Vier, Hugo Boss – these are just a few of the many names that have left their mark on the Stuttgart Region and made it what it is today.
The name of Stuttgart derives from "Stuotgarten", the stud farm said to have been founded by Duke Liudolf of Swabia in 950 A.D. To defend it, the Old Palace was built, which since 1949 has housed the Württemberg State Museum. The New Palace was the residence of the kings of Württemberg up to the middle of the 19th century. Today the building contains ministries of the Baden-Württemberg state government and state reception rooms. Palace Square is where the city's heartbeat can best be felt. Just by turning once on your own axis, you can see many of the city's main attractions: a synthesis of medieval, baroque, classical and contemporary architecture, Stuttgart's characteristic hill slopes, views of the vineyards, the Mercedes Star on top of the station tower – and overlooking it all a symbol of Stuttgart's inventive genius – the Television Tower.
For Car Enthusiasts
The Stuttgart Region is the cradle of the automobile – and thanks to the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum a mecca for automobile fans from all over the world. The Mercedes-Benz Museum is a living testimony to the over 135-year evolution of the automobile and the Mercedes-Benz brand. It documents automotive and contemporary history from the world's first patented car to the hydrogen-powered vehicles of the future. At the Porsche-Museum more than 80 vehicles illustrate the history of this sports car producer. Another automotive highlight is the Motorworld Region Stuttgart in Stuttgart-Böblingen. The complex, consisting of a design hotel, an event venue and an exhibition, is a stylish setting for all kinds of activities on the theme of classic cars. The automobile pioneer Gottlieb Daimler was born as the son of a baker in Schorndorf in the year 1834. His Birthplace is now a museum and gives personal insights into the inventor's cosmos. For Culture Lovers
The 26-m-high glass cube of the Museum of Art is a work of art in its own right. It owns a world-famous collection of works by Otto Dix, including the "Portrait of the Dancer Anita Berber" and the "Metropolis" triptych. The State Gallery's postmodernist Stirling building is an eye-catcher on Stuttgart's so-called 'culture mile'. One of Germany's most popular art museums, its treasures include Oskar Schlemmer's "Figurines from the Triadic Ballet" from the early 1920s and the Joseph Beuys Room, which the artist installed himself. The Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart is an important testimony to the Bauhaus style of architecture. Conceived by 17 architects in 1927 for the Werkbund exhibition "Die Wohnung" ("The Dwelling"), its two Le Corbusier houses are now a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The Stuttgart State Theatres, Europe's largest triple-branch theatre ensemble, are the city's cultural flagship. The award-winning Stuttgart State Opera provides new impulses for contemporary music theatre, dance enthusiasts associate the Stuttgart Ballet with great names such as John Cranko and Marcia Haydée, and the Schauspiel Stuttgart theatre company is often in the public eye as one of the most innovative in German-speaking theatre circles. As the birthplace of German Hip-Hop, the Stuttgart Region has a diverse and innovative music scene. The annual jazzopen Stuttgart, the Stuttgart Music Festival or the Ludwigsburg Festival are outstanding examples of this. For Epicures
Stuttgart's cityscape is defined by the vineyards which stretch into the centre of town. This wine-growing region with a long tradition has many great "Wengerter" (vintners). Their wines have won many awards and appeal to the taste of wine lovers and experts alike. Much of the wine produced here is also drunk locally, for example in the traditional "Besenwirtschaften" ("broom taverns") – temporary wine taverns serving only the wine growers' own wines and delicious Swabian food. You'll find all you need to know about the history of wine growing at the Stuttgart Museum of Viniculture. Down-to-earth Swabian dishes and exquisite starred cuisine are equally at home in the Region. "Maultaschen" (filled pasta) or "Gaisburger Marsch" (a savoury hotpot) are just two of the classic regional specialities. For starred fine dining there is a wealth of starred restaurants – with eight in Stuttgart alone, and 14 more in the Region. Traditions are also kept alive at the annual festivals: the Cannstatt Beer Festival has become one of the largest public festivals in the world. The focus here is on the huge beer tents of Stuttgart's breweries. The Stuttgart Wine Festival and the Fellbach Autumn Festival are just two of the many wine festivals, and in the weeks of Advent there are countless atmospheric Christmas markets.A Look at the Region
The area around Stuttgart stands out with its medieval charm, baroque elegance and famous men of letters. Nowhere else are there so many well-preserved half-timbered buildings as in the medieval town of Esslingen. The city of Ludwigsburg boasts Germany's largest baroque palace complex. Ludwigsburg Palace (1733), also known as the "Swabian Versailles" consists of 18 buildings and is surrounded by a 32-hectare park. The Galerie Stihl in Waiblingen and the Kunsthalle Würth present outstanding art collections and no less interesting temporary exhibitions. The Museum of Modern Literature and the National Schiller Museum in Marbach am Neckar are the only buildings in the world to be devoted exclusively to exhibitions of literary works. In Göppingen the Märklineum presents on an exhibition area of 2,000 square metres products from the whole of the firm's past and documents the history of the company Märklin. A special highlight is the 200-square-metre model railway layout, which can be accessed on two levels.Additional information on the Stuttgart Region under www.stuttgart-tourist.de
- The SWR TV Tower Stuttgart
This is the forerunner of all television towers and is regarded as an aesthetic and architectural masterpiece: the SWR TV Tower Stuttgart. Built 60 years ago, it is today one of the city's main landmarks. At the time of construction, many of Stuttgart's inhabitants had their doubts as to the stability of this first tower to be built using reinforced concrete.
The original plans for a television tower were for a functional steel lattice mast on top of the 483-metre-high hill known as the Bopser. However, the famous Stuttgart bridge builder and structural engineer, Professor Fritz Leonhardt, proposed a concrete construction instead. Not only was the structure itself an innovation, but so, too, was the idea of using the tower for tourism and catering purposes. Much later than scheduled, the tower, with an observation deck in an almost circular cylindrical pod, was officially opened on 5th February 1956. The costs of building, 4.2 million DM, were recouped within five years by the takings in admission charges. The tower is one of the most outstanding cultural monuments in the Stuttgart Region. Visitors can admire the magnificent views from its two-tiered observation deck at a height of 150 metres above ground. No other location in Stuttgart provides such wonderful tele-vision in the true sense of the word, with sweeping views over the Neckar Valley with its vineyards, the Swabian Alb, the Black Forest and the Odenwald.
"Leonhardt's" is the name of the Television Tower's restaurant, which offers regional Swabian cuisine at the foot of the Tower. In the summer months the beer garden is ideal for eating outdoors. The Panorama Café – less down-to-earth – serves coffee and cakes during the day at a height of 147 metres, while in the evening guests can enjoy Stuttgart's night-time panorama over a cool drink.
Since it was built, the SWR TV Tower Stuttgart has been imitated all over the world. One of its "twins" can be seen in Johannesburg. Nevertheless, the Stuttgart model with its harmonious proportions remains unique.
UNESCO World Heritage candidate: In December 2023, the SWR TV Tower in Stuttgart was, as one of two proposals from Baden-Württemberg, included on the German tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
