Music Festivals in the Stuttgart Region

As in previous years, in 2021 countless first-class concerts and outstanding music events in the Stuttgart Region will invite audiences to share an unforgettable musical experience. The Ludwigsburg Festival and the Festival of European Church Music are just two of the wide range of music festivals on offer.

The Ludwigsburg Festival is rich in tradition and in 2021 will once again provide a diverse and innovative programme of classical music, jazz, dance, theatre and literature. From 6th May to 11th July 2021, stars from Germany and abroad can be seen and heard at the Baroque former royal residence of Ludwigsburg Palace, as well as at other unique venues. In the 2021 season the Ludwigsburg Festival will be augmented by new digital and hybrid event formats.
This year the festival will open with the "Fest Spiel Ouvertüre" – a musical discourse on the equilibrium between man and nature – with the Festival Orchestra. Other outstanding events include Barbara Hannigan's double evening "Chiaroscuro", together with the Festival Orchestra, and Pina Bausch's "Sacre". In 2021 for the first time, the legendary "Monrepos Open Air" under the musical direction of Alondra de la Parra will last a whole weekend.

The Festival of European Church Music will be held for the 33rd time now in Schwäbisch Gmünd from 16th July to 8th August 2021. With nine notable churches from eight centuries as the locations, audiences can look forward not only to a high quality of musical enjoyment, but to a unique ambience as well. Venues include the Heilig-Kreuz-Münster (Minster of the Holy Cross), South Germany's oldest Gothic hall church, the Romanesque Johanniskirche (St. John's Church) with its Byzantine-style apse, and the Church of St. Franziskus (the former Franciscan monastery church, now with a Baroque interior). The selection of local and international ensembles and a repertoire ranging from medieval to contemporary works enthuse around 15,000 visitors each year and account for the festival's appeal far beyond the bounds of Southern Germany. The theme of this year’s programme is "Gott und die Welt" ("God and the World").
